My sister has Invisalign. She’s really excited about them, but they’re picking up stains every time. They start off invisible then start turning yellowish. I want to help her with this because no one else I know who’s had Invisalign has had this problem. What is she doing wrong?
It sounds like you are a great sister. I’m glad she has someone looking out for her the way you do. It is possible that your sister is unintentionally damaging her Invisalign aligners when she cleans them. Here are some tips you can give her so her aligners can be sparkly clean and completely invisible.
Don’t Use Toothpaste on Invisalign
Toothpaste is much more abrasive than people realize, especially teeth whitening brands. Because of that, they’ll get little scratches in the aligners which you won’t be able to see with your eye. Unfortunately, those scratches allow food, drink, and bacteria to get trapped in there creating stains.
Remember to Remove Your Aligners Before Eating, Drinking, or Smoking
When it comes to eating and drinking, not only can they stain your aligners but this habit will also contribute to serious decay. That’s because the aligners essentially trap the food and drink in your aligner allowing it to pool there and eat away at your enamel.
As for smoking. The smoke will stain anything it touches, walls, furniture, clothing. Your aligners are just as vulnerable and will quickly become a yellowish brown color. If you can’t kick the habit, at least make sure you remove your aligners first.
How to Clean Your Invisalign Aligners
Your dentist should have provided you with an Invisalign cleaning kit when you first received them. If he or she didn’t or you lost them, you can use a baking soda paste to clean them. Just mix some baking soda and water and gently clean them with a soft-bristled toothbrush.
A Hidden Benefit of Invisalign
One “secret” bonus she can get with Invisalign is the aligners can double as teeth whitening trays. This will allow your sister to simultaneously straighten and whiten her teeth.
If you give your sister all this information, you’ll be her hero.
