Solving Three Common Invisalign Problems
While Invisalign has an extraordinarily high patient satisfaction rate, every treatment has its pros and cons, as well as its challenges. There are three common challenges with Invisalign. Fortunately, none of them are very difficult and all of them have solutions.
Pain with Invisalign
About one-half of all Invisalign patients have reported some discomfort when they start a new pair of aligners. While this pain is nowhere near that which they’d experience with traditional orthodontics, it is still discomfort.
This discomfort comes from the initial shifting of your teeth. An over-the-counter anti-inflammatory such as ibuprofen will help. The discomfort doesn’t last more than two or three days, then everything feels “normal” again.
Keeping Fresh Breath with Invisalign
This is the most avoidable problem. If you keep up with your recommended hygiene, you shouldn’t have any issues. You’ll need to brush your teeth after each meal and floss at least once a day. That’s rather simple.
However, let us say for sake of argument you don’t think it’s that necessary. What would happen if you didn’t? Whenever you eat, some food and bacteria will get caught between and around your teeth. Leaving them trapped in your aligners will create a breeding ground for bacteria. Not only will that put you in significant danger of decay, but it will also cause the nasty side effect of dragon breath. You may not start any fires with it, but people will certainly flee.
Excess Saliva with Invisalign
This is a very temporary problem. When you first begin your Invisalign treatment, your body notices a foreign object in your mouth. As a defense, it produces excess saliva in the hopes of aiding digestion.
It doesn’t last long. One thing which can help make you feel more comfortable about the issue is to practice speaking while no one is around so you don’t worry about any saliva escaping.
A Useful Side Benefit of Invisalign
As we’ve talked about the challenges, I thought it only fair to talk about one lovely benefit you couldn’t get with another type of treatment.
The aligners can double as teeth whitening trays. This allows you to knock two cosmetic procedures out at once. It’s like getting a mini smile makeover.
