No Space for a Dental Implant?
I lost a tooth years ago at a rodeo. I was bull riding. I won the round, but lost a tooth. It was in a place that wasn’t obvious when I smile. I decided an expensive repair could wait. A few weeks ago I lost the adjacent tooth. Now that it’s visible I want to fix them both but my dentist said there’s not enough room for two dental implants there. How can that be possible if there were two teeth there? Instead, he wants me to get a dental bridge.
It sounds like your current dentist has developed some apathy in his practice. It’s likely he’s comfortable doing a bridge, but doesn’t have much experience doing dental implants. That doesn’t mean you won’t be able to replace your teeth with implants. There are usually creative ways to make things work.
Most dentists don’t like removing healthy tooth structure, which is necessary for a dental bridge, so they’ll work to find creative solutions.
You asked how there could no longer be space when there were two teeth there to begin with. When you lost your first tooth and didn’t replace it, the remaining teeth will slowly shift into the empty space. That’s likely what happened to yours and why your dentist doesn’t believe you can get two teeth in there.
Fitting Dental Implants
An experienced implant dentist knows how to use the options available. Some dentists might suggest a mini implant. While those can help stabilize a denture, they’re not a great option for sustaining a dental crown. They’re just not strong enough.
My suggestion would be to get one traditional sized implant and use it to support two crowns.
Another alternative, if you really want two separate implants would be to have some form of orthodontics done first to make room for two.
Invisalign is a great option for adults because it allows you to have your teeth repaired discreetly. Their clear aligners are invisible even at a conversational distance. In your case, you could probably get Invisalign Express which works even faster.
