Should I Be a Guinea Pig for an Affordable Dentist?
I just received an online advertisement from a dentist who is offering dental crowns at a reduced rate because he just purchased a CEREC machine which allows him to do crowns in just one appointment and he wants to practice. Is this okay to do or am I asking for trouble? I have a tooth which has needed a crown but I’ve been putting it off because of cost. It’s just a large cavity right now?
This can be okay if you go into it with realistic expectations. It may take him a few hours to get it right. If you don’t mind that it will take much longer than a normal appointment you should be okay. I would ask him what happens if you hate the crown?
There are other ways to get affordable dental care aside from being a guinea pig. Many affordable dentists allow for payment plans when patients don’t have the money they need to get essential care.
Either they will have an in-house payment plan, or they will work with Care Credit, which is a medical loan service.
What You Don’t Want to Do?
My biggest concern is that you may end up with a dental infection if you continue to put this off. Dental infections are considered dental emergencies. They can blow up quickly and even be life-threatening.
Truthfully, the sooner you get treatment, the more affordable the care will be. Filling a small cavity is much less expensive than letting it grow and needing a porcelain crown. A crown alone is cheaper than it turning into an infection and needing a root canal or, even worse, a tooth extraction.
Once you lose a tooth, the cost jumps up significantly if you want to replace it. Ideally, I’d get this fixed now before it requires more invasive repairs.
