Is There Any Way to Get Affordable Braces?
I used to think my parents were cheapskates. When I was in middle-school, all my friends were getting braces…except me. My parents kept saying they were too expensive. I couldn’t figure out how all my friend’s parents could afford them but mine couldn’t. Now that I’m an adult and have my own job I thought I would finally be able to get braces. What a fool I was, both in middle-school and now. I’ve spoken to two different orthodontists and both of them quoted me a price way out of my budget. Is there any way to get affordable braces or am I destined to look foolish the rest of my life?
It’s amazing how much wiser our parents seem after we get older. When we’re young expenses don’t have a context for us, so don’t be too hard on yourself. Yes, braces can be quite expensive. Think of them as an investment, not just in your appearance, but your health.
Most people don’t realize how much a bite which is out of place can affect your overall health. A bad bite can cause daily migraines and even lead to TMJ Disorder. It’s important to get that bite fixed. The good news is there are affordable ways to get braces.
Ways to Afford Braces
Get the most of your insurance.
The first thing I’d do is look into your dental insurance. Some policies will cover up to 50% of your cost. The business manager at your dental practice is usually an insurance expert. Talk to him or her about how to get the most out of your policy, if you have one.
In-office payment plans.
Most dental offices are willing to work with you on payments. Traditional metal braces are often done in stages and dentists will often divide up your payments into those stages.
If your dentist insists on all the payment up front, I’d look into Care Credit. It’s a way of obtaining medical credit. They’ll pay the dentist for your treatment and then you pay them in stages. The company allows you to choose the terms of repayment. Depending on your credit, you can even get zero interest payment plans. One thing I think is great about them is there is no penalty for early payoff if you come into some money, the way consumer credit cards do.
Braces for Adults
While the young ‘uns look adorable in traditional braces, most adults don’t like a mouth full of metal. Fortunately, they no longer have to!
Invisalign is a brand of invisible braces. They use clear aligners that gently move your teeth into position. Because the treatment is precisely planned by a sophisticated software program, it often works faster than traditional braces as well.
