No one wants to lose their teeth. It affects the way people perceive you. Though unfair, we are often judged on our appearance. But, missing teeth affects more than how you look. It makes it harder to eat, which has a negative impact on your health. Sometimes, despite our best efforts, things go wrong and teeth are lost.
When that happens, you’ll want the best replacement possible. Dental implants look and feel like having your natural, healthy teeth back.
What Are Dental Implants?
Your natural teeth are made of roots and crowns. Dental implants are the same. First, is the artificial tooth root. It’s made of titanium and surgically placed into your jawbone. The second part is the crown which will sit on top of the root, serving as the visible part of your tooth.
They’re strong and function just like your natural teeth. You can eat whatever you want, without risk to the implant, and brush your teeth as you normally would.
Dental Implant Procedure
If you’re a candidate for dental implants, the procedure starts with surgically placing the titanium roots into your jawbone. This is one of the biggest advantages to dental implants because it protects your jaw from mineral reabsorption that begins when your teeth are removed. That’s why the faces of people who wear dentures eventually develop an old, scrunched up appearance. This won’t happen with dental implants.
After the implants are placed, we’ll give you some time to heal, as well as allow your bone to form around your new “roots”. This process, called osseointegration, is essential for the success of your implant procedure. Once this is done, we’ll place a gorgeous crown on top of the implant, completing your tooth.
The Importance of a Qualified Implant Dentist
While dental implants have a high success rate, it is an advanced procedure and there are many horror stories out there from patients who went to an inexperienced implant dentist. It’s important you go to a dentist with the right training. At Angel Dental Care, Dr. Elwary and Dr. Hani do our dental implants. Dr. Hani is a fellow at the California Implant Institute. Dr. Elwary not only is certified with the American Academy of Implant Dentistry and the International Congress of Oral Implantology, but lectures weekly teaching dental implant procedures to other dentists.
Additionally, he is a trained oral and maxillofacial surgeon, eliminating the need for you to go to two doctors to complete your dental implants. This eliminates one problem in dental implant treatment–miscommunication between surgeon and dentist.
