Boyfriends’s Breath Smells Awful with Invisalign
Ever since my boyfriend got his Invisalign, his breath has been awful. Is it the Invisalign or is something else going on? If It is Invisalign, is there a way to make this better? I don’t want to find ways to avoid kissing him forever. I can tell he’s starting to get worried. He keeps bringing me extra presents. While the presents are nice, I want my old boyfriend back.
There can be medical reasons why his breath has suddenly turned sour. For instance, a bacterial infection such as strep can cause horrible breath. If that’s the case, it’s a good thing you’re not kissing him because it’s contagious. However, before you rush him off to the doctor, let’s just eliminate Invisalign as the cause.
It could be your boyfriend is not following the right protocol when it comes to taking care of his Invisalign.
Keeping Invisalign Clean and Fresh
Rule One: Don’t eat or drink with your aligners in.
The exception to this rule is water. He can drink as much water as he wants while his aligners are in place. The reason we discourage other food and beverages is because they will get caught in the aligners. If water trickles its way in, it will do no harm to his teeth. Imagine, however, if a soda became pooled in there. The acid and sugars in carbonated beverages will eat away at his teeth. Not to mention the smells which will develop from the bacteria.
Rule Two: Brush and floss regularly.
For brushing, he needs to do it morning and night, as well as every time he eats. Flossing should be a minimum of once a day. This is important to keep food and bacteria from building up in his aligners, between his teeth, or trapped in his gums.
Rule Three: Stay Hydrated.
Dehydration can also cause foul smelling breath. It’s possible he thinks he can’t drink at all with his Invisalign. Make sure he knows he can have as much water as he desires. This will help him stay hydrated.
Rule Four: Clean your aligners daily
His dentist should have provided a cleaning kit for his aligners. If that’s gone or he lost it, he can brush gently with a soft toothbrush and a baking soda and water mixture.
If none of those help, he can talk to his dentist to see what’s going on. It’s best you let him know right away. Put the boy out of his misery before he worries you’re dumping him.
