I’m very frustrated. I tend to get more cavities than most people. It is so frustrating. I brush after every meal and floss daily, yet I’m still constantly having to repair things. I want to get to the bottom of why but all my dentist does is a constant barrage of fillings and crowns. I decided to see a holistic dentist thinking they’d help me get to the bottom of things. I almost lost my mind when what she suggested was fluoride. Fluoride? Isn’t that considered dangerous? If I can’t get to the bottom of things with a natural cure from a holistic dentist where can I go? I’m at my wits end.
I can tell you are frustrated. It is especially hard when you are taking all the right steps and things are still going wrong. There can be several reasons why you are having more cavities than most. The first is just the genetic lottery. Some people’s teeth are more prone to decay than others regardless of how great their oral hygiene is.
A second possibility is snacking or drinking habits. If you sip on drinks all day, with the exception of water, it can cause real havoc on your enamel. That is especially true of coffee, tea, and sugary juice drinks. If you are a big coffee drinker you may want to cut back or possibly rinse your mouth out as soon as possible after drinking it. These types of drinks are acidic and eat away at your tooth’s enamel.
A third possible cause is dry mouth. Some medications can cause a decrease in your saliva. Our bodies are designed in a wonderful way. The saliva in our mouths is our first defense against cavities because it contains bacteria fighting minerals which protect our teeth from the things which eat away at our enamel.
How Can a Holistic Dentist Help?
A holistic dentist will always try to find the most healthy solutions possible for you. For instance, if you need a filling, they will give you a mercury-free filling. They will often provide metal-free dental care as well such as a porcelain or zirconia crown.
However, if your holistic dentist is suggesting fluoride, that means your body, specifically your teeth, need it, and it will be the most natural solution for you. While there is a fluoride free movement who have sited some studies saying that fluoride is dangerous, most studies show, when used properly fluoride is both safe and important for oral health.
Given the situation, you have two choices. You can go ahead with the fluoride treatments or you can look for a different dentist.
