I’ve always wanted braces, but couldn’t stand the idea of a mouth full of metal at my age. Over Christmas, my granddaughter was here and she wore these invisible braces called Invisalign. She said a lot of her friends are getting those instead the old braces. I liked the idea and couldn’t even tell she was wearing them until she told me. Am I too old?
Invisalign was originally designed with adults in mind. There are many mature humans, who wanted to improve their smile but felt that metal braces would have a negative impact on how they were viewed at their job. Invisible braces were the perfect solution.
Then teens jumped on the bandwagon. There’s even a specific brand now called Invisalign Teen. It’s slightly more expensive because it allows for a certain number of misplaced aligners.
If you’re a good candidate for Invisalign, you’re definitely not too old. Your teeth and gums will need to be healthy in order to assure they’ll be safe as they shift positions. As long as that’s the case most patients are candidates.
If for some reason you’re not a good candidate, that doesn’t mean you’re stuck.
Alternatives to Invisalign
In that case, you have a couple of good options. The first would be to visit with an orthodontist. There are clear braces, which are more comfortable than their straight metal counterparts. If it’s the idea of being seen in braces that bothers you, you could get lingual braces. These are placed behind your teeth where no one can see them, but work like traditional braces.
If you just want to give your teeth the appearance of being straight, Lumineers can do that for you. However, this is usually used with patients who are looking for a total smile makeover and are more expensive than braces. It’s little wafers of porcelain that are bonded onto your teeth. They can change everything about the appearance of your smile, including the shape, size, and color. If that’s something you’re interested in, you’d look for a cosmetic dentist instead of an orthodontist.
