I keep reading about two types of invisible orthodontic treatments for adults: Invisalign and Lingual Braces. Which one is better? I’m a business professional, so I definitely don’t want a mouth full of metal. That’s why I’m only looking at invisible options. I speak a lot at conferences, so appearance is important.
Lingual braces aren’t invisible in the same sense the Invisalign aligners are. Though, they are hidden. They’re placed behind your teeth, on the tongue side. So, while they are metal braces, because they’re placed on the back of your teeth, no one can see them.
Invisalign, on the other hand, do go over the front of your teeth, but instead of metal wires and brackets it’s made of clear, flexible material that you fit over your teeth. While the lingual braces are bonded on, Invisalign is removable. That brings tremendous benefits when it comes to oral hygiene. You simply remove them, then brush and floss your teeth as you normally would.
In your place, I’d recommend you go with Invisalign. Your professional job is very public and requires you to speak a lot in front of people. With lingual braces, many patients find their tongue drawn to the metal behind their teeth. Not only is that uncomfortable, but they have trouble annunciating clearly.
With Invisalign, even if you were still adjusting to having them on your teeth, if you had an important speaking engagement, you could remove them temporarily for your speech.
They have an added benefit too. The Invisalign aligner can double as teeth whitening trays. This will allow you to whiten your teeth while simultaneously straightening them, giving you a gorgeous smile by the end of your treatment. Whitening treatment tends to take years off someone’s appearance.
